Why do unusual experiences occur?

People can have many different explanations for their unusual experiences — and no one explanation is “more correct” than another.

In some cultures, these experiences are seen as a gift or a special sensitivity. Others may understand them as spiritual or paranormal. Sometimes, unusual experiences are part of a mental health difficulty that needs treatment. Getting help early can make things easier and improve outcomes.

These experiences often happen because of a mix of factors:

  • Social: difficult life events (like bullying, family separation or discrimination), money worries, or feeling alone, living in the city, or experiencing grief
  • Psychological: stress from school, work, or life, and not having the right support to cope
  • Biological: family mental health history, poor sleep, drug use, brain injuries, or health problems or even some medications
These factors are illustrated as water filling a bucket, where the water represents unusual experiences flowing out.

The stream of water, influenced by social and psychological factors, accumulates throughout life's journey.

The bucket's sturdiness and capacity symbolize biological factors.

The water may overflow due to various social or psychological factors or because the bucket lacks the capacity or solidity necessary.

If numerous stress factors are pouring in without enough coping mechanisms to help the water drain out, it can lead to an overflow, resulting in unusual experiences.
